How To Prepare the Exterior of a Home Before Painting
Preparing the exterior of any home before painting is the most crucial step any professional painter should take. First, we start by pressure washing the house with outdoor bleach and water. Then we check for any cracks or openings in the wood and seal it with caulk. We like to use the 950A Caulk from Sherwin Williams, which is a really durable and water-resistant caulk. Then we check for any holes around the house and make sure to putty all of them. We also make sure to cover all of the client's furniture with plastic and tape as well as windows, doors, gutters, etc. if we will be spray painting the home.
After that, our next step is to get the paint ready for application. We use Sherwin Williams Duration Paint for most of our exterior jobs because it provides durability and excellent quality. We first start with the base of the house, which are: brick, stucco, siding, soffit, and fascia. Depending on what colors the client wants, then that will be the order in which we will work. And lastly, we do the trim of the house. This includes doors, shutters, garage doors, window trims, etc.
Average Finish Time
Our exterior average paint job typically takes anywhere from 4-7 days from prepping to finishing. Our guys take pride in their work and want each and every home to come out beautifully.
Weather Situations
When we're working on exterior projects, we have to keep our mother nature on our side. We don't like to paint in weather under 55 degrees as the paint might not dry out even and perfect as it should. Also, when theirs rain on the radar, we like to take those days off and focus on interior paint jobs.
How Do We Paint
In most of our exterior jobs, we try to use an airless sprayer as much as possible since it is fast, efficient and the quality of the job finish is much better. When there are situations where we can't use a sprayer, then we tend to go the old school route and use a brush and a roller. With a brush and a roller, it takes 2-3 more times to get the job done but in some scenarios is the only way to get it done. Soffits and Fascias 90% of the time we spray them since we have a shield that is meant to prevent overspray from getting on the shingles, sometimes we put tape on the metal in the roofing to prevent overspray from getting on the shingles as well.
